PROJECT No:1

Income Generating Project, Haiti, Caribbean

The Caribbean American Chamber of Commerce of Tampa Bay (CACCTB) is in the process of creating an Income Generating Project (IGP) for a community in Port au Prince in partnership with GREDEVE, Groupe d’Entraide pour le Developpment de l’Enfant. The project is being spearheaded by the Chamber’s Director of Outreach Programs, Rose Woodard along with Hillsborough Community College international student, Larissa Ripari, of Sao Paulo, Brazil.

GREDEVE is a non-profit project based organization founded to aid the youth of Haiti by promoting social, physical, and mental development through various outreach programs.  Youth all over Port au Prince who often have no parents, no education, and no one to teach them have been reached by GREDEVE. Over the years, GREDEVE has operated programs which teach youth and others about proper personal hygiene, AIDS prevention, and responsible care for the environment, along with basic training in arts, crafts, and pottery. Many of the youth who have passed through GREDEVE were able to go back to school, were taught technical skills leading to employment and were instructed on how to become leaders in their own communities.

IGP Participant

Though the requirement for immediate assistance in the form of food, water, medicine and clothing donations to Haiti are crucial at this time, CACCTB recognizes that there is a longstanding need in Haiti for ongoing sources of income to provide access to basic living necessities. In an effort to address the enduring poverty in Port au Prince, the Haitian people are eager to find sustainable ways to provide a steady flow of income to support themselves, their children and communities.  GREDEVE has a solid record of successful partnership with other NGO’s and has been awarded significant grants largely through USAID  to create programs designed to support Haitian youth who would not otherwise have access to education or economic advancement.

CACCTB launched a contest in Haiti beginning April 15, open to the youth of GREDEVE as well as to youth from seven partner organizations, as the first phase of the Income Generation Project. These youth have been challenged to create a unique, handmade, preferably eco-friendly product which represents Haiti’s culture and people. The product is to be made from local material and it is preferable that the material is recycled, reused, or repurposed.

It is our hope that from the contest, an item which can be reproduced in larger quantities and sold in both Haiti, Brazil, Canada and the US will be identified.

IGP Participants 2

The objective of this project is to use local knowledge and innate creativity of motivated Haitian youth, to inspire the organic development of a new product or series of products that will ideally generate sustainable income for people who are currently lacking economic opportunity.  This project is unique because participants are given the opportunity to use their creativity and native knowledge to find materials and create designs.

PROJECT No 2:

Caribbean Chamber supports post Haiti Stress Relief Workshops

PRESS RELEASE  – Project, Tampa Florida -Haiti

In late March 2010, after the devastating 7.0 earthquake which rocked the island nation of Haiti on January 12, Rose Woodard, Director of Outreach Programs for the Caribbean American Chamber of Commerce traveled to a small community in Port au Prince, Haiti to meet with youth from a partner organization, GREDEVE, to assess post-earthquake, as well as ongoing general needs. One of the needs which seemed to resurface in Woodard’s week-long visit was a wish for psychological treatment targeting the trauma induced by the earthquake.

After returning to Florida, Woodard was able to contact Nouvelle Vie Haiti Youth Corps, an organization which has committed two years to addressing the emotional, psychological and physiological needs resulting from the Haitian earthquake disaster. From April 16 to 18, 2010 the Nouvelle Vie Youth Corps and GREDEVE partnered to present a series of psychosocial activities for twenty seven youth who are affiliated with GREDEVE along with other youth in the community affected by the earthquake.  These workshops were designed by trained professionals with Nouvelle Haiti to address the psychosocial needs of youth in Port au Prince, particularly in relation to post traumatic stress disorder prevalent in the aftermath of the earthquake. Nouvelle Haiti has organized this initiative to diminish the affects of stress in the high-risk, post-earthquake environment through a combination of breathing and meditation techniques with emphasis on healthy eating and exercising. The youth who participated in this two day workshop benefited from the skills taught, and reported satisfaction with the format.

Nouvelle Haiti facilitates the workshop with a team of six teachers led by David Trottier from Quebec who works for the Lifestyles Foundation of Canada. The primary purpose of this initiative is to engage youth in stress management techniques and teach them methods of breathing and meditation therapy to be practiced independently. Forty young people of all ages were present at this program focusing on enriching life through maintaining physical and emotional health.
